Swedish Moss Innovator Joins Global Leaders at UNCCD COP16 in Saudi Arabia

From December 2-13, Daniel Pacurar, an eco-tech innovator from northern Sweden, will join global leaders in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for UNCCD COP16, a climate conference focused on combating drought and desertification. Daniel has been invited to hold a seminar to present the re:moss concept.
“With the help of the re:moss concept and technology, we aim to support the countries and regions facing these challenges,” says Daniel, Founder and Executive Chairman of Boreal Orchards.

The UN is hosting four COP meetings this fall, each addressing critical environmental issues: biodiversity, global emissions, plastic pollution, and desertification. The UNCCD COP16 (UN Convention to Combat Desertification) in Riyadh is poised to be a game changer, marking a renewed global commitment to accelerate investment and action to restore land and boost drought resilience for the benefit of people and the planet. The UNCCD targets the restoration of 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land by 2030.

Growing interest outside of Europe
Under Daniel’s leadership, Boreal Orchards has been pioneering the cultivation and “planting” of moss to accelerate ecological restoration. While the primary focus has been Northern Europe, including a significant project with the Swedish mining industry, their innovative solutions have global potential.

”With the growing interest in our work outside Europe, we are "looking ahead" to see how we can contribute to the bigger picture. At the planetary level, there are no borders, we share the same air and sky, and if we can support the restoration efforts anywhere on the planet we´ll all benefit from better air, cleaner sky, and healthier soil”, explains Daniel, who receives business support from Umeå Biotech Incubator.

COP16 will bring together representatives from governments, UN agencies, international organizations, funding bodies, civil society, academia, and the private sector.

Present the re:moss concept on stage
Daniel, who recently participated in a major mining convention in Canada as part of a Swedish delegation, has been invited to present a seminar on the Innovation Stage about his re:moss concept.

“re:moss addresses large-scale ecological restoration. Restoring landscapes after mining is one application that significantly impacts ecosystems and communities due to natural disturbances, dust, and pollution, but compared to this, desertification and land degradation have a much larger global impact. We are not yet present in these areas, but our heroes, the mosses, are already there,” says Daniel.

In addition to his seminar, Daniel will engage in meetings and networking opportunities.

“I will take the opportunity to meet decision-makers from politics, civil society organizations, and the private sector to discuss how we can assist them in their work.”
