Press release -

Umeå Biotech Incubator receives SEK 2.5 million support from Kempestiftelserna

Umeå Biotech Incubator (UBI) has been awarded 2.5 million SEK in continued support from Kempestiftelserna for 2026. These funds are designated to assist verification activities for researchers and projects associated with UBI.
"We are pleased and grateful to receive continued trust from Kempestiftelserna. These funds provide researchers at, among others, Umeå University a unique opportunity to commercialize their research through UBI" states Peter Jacobsson, Acting Operations Manager at UBI.

Last year, the Financial Times recognized Umeå Biotech Incubator as one of ”Europe's leading startup hubs”. A key strength of UBI is the funding it can provide to its projects. Besides excellence funds from the Swedish Innovation Agency Vinnova (UBI received 14.6 million SEK in January for the next four years), UBI has access to funds from two family foundations, the Erling Persson Foundation (EP) and Kempestiftelserna.

Kempestiftelserna are two foundations that support pioneering research and initiatives in Västerbotten, Västernorrland, and Norrbotten. Over the years, they have contributed significant amounts to research and innovation, and Umeå Biotech Incubator has received support from Kempestiftelserna for several years.

Now, Kempestiftelserna has granted continued support of 2.5 million SEK for 2026. These funds are intended to verify research and data for early-stage ideas in life sciences and cannot be allocated to registered companies.

Peter Jacobsson, Acting Operations Manager at UBI, stated, "We are a specialized incubator with expertise in life sciences and an incubation process refined over more than 20 years. With the soft funds we manage, we can offer a unique financing model for researchers aiming to commercialize their research."

He added: "Our strategy is to incorporate as late as possible, allowing our projects access to soft funds without needing to venture into an uncertain market to secure verification funds. I also want to emphasize that our EP and Kempe funds are exclusively for research verification and not for the operation of Umeå Biotech Incubator."
